Alzheimer’s = Insulin resistance in the brain. Caused by too much insulin in the blood stream for long periods of time. Insulin causes inflammation which creates deposits of plaques in the brain. The same process as clogging of arteries of the heart. Alzheimer’s is Diabetes type 3. Everything I described is working in undiagnosed people because the testing levels currently used are set far to high to reveal insulin sensitivity. I also pointed out to my family Dr. that he should be checking fasting insulin as well in all older people and especially those with a waist to height ratio of more than 0.5 to 1. See this National Institute of Health Study for a partial reference. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2769828/ While they conclude in the this paper that possibly Alzheimer’s may be treatable with Anti-diabetes drugs, which is the whole focus of modern research, pills, drugs, and surgery, they totally overlook the primary cause diet and insulin.
Caution: Do not embark on a low carb diet or fasting when on High Blood Pressure or Diabetic medication. It is probable that anyone on these meds will have their need for them dramatically and suddenly reduced and then become dangerously over medicated. In the case of these medications, a patient MUST consult and be tested closely at first to prevent a dangerous situation of being over medicated.
I’ve been saying this for a year and a half now. It’s information I’ve gained by listening to Medical Doctors and PhD researchers in the field of very low Carbohydrate (Keto) diets, especially the Carnivore diet. Insulin is a killer hormone when found at higher levels several times a day and for hours a day in the bloodstream. The purpose of insulin is to store fat during short summer seasons to prepare for winter when food in nature is less abundant. Think Bear. But like many things, too much insulin is not a good thing. The way we eat in modern times keeps insulin at unnatural levels during all our waking hours and well into the night storing fat and creating inflammation. A fasting blood glucose blood test is almost meaningless in this context. A fasting insulin level on the other hand will show how much we may have damaged our ability to deal with excess insulin in the body. This also uncovers the increasing number of people doctors now label as TOFI (Thin Outside Fat Inside) a prime example of this would be fatty liver, pancreas, or kidneys in a person of normal weight.
We must keep the level of insulin as low as possible at all times and go as long as possible between insulin spikes which caused by eating anything with carbohydrates in it. The higher the Carbs the higher and longer the insulin spike. A diet of less than 50g of carbs a day is most ideal. For those with heart disease, stroke, HBP, Alzheimer’s or family HX of either, 0 carb is best.
Intermittent fasting is also a powerful tool. It not only controls insulin, it turns on powerful healing mechanisms that do not operate under having insulin in the blood stream (especially in Adults) Dr. Jason Fung M.D. Nephrologist (Kidney Disease) whose practice mainly deals with diabetics with Kidney disease. Interview here: https://youtu.be/v9Aw0P7GjHE?t=92 No benefits come from fasting for less than 12 hours. Only past 12 hours minimum and really getting into high gear after 18 hours is the process of Autophagy beginning. Autophagy is the body’s cleanup and repair cycle. During Autophagy the adult human body begins to produce much larger amounts of Stem Cells, Human Growth Hormone (HGH), inflammation does down, and cell repair becomes effective. The term Autophagy illustrates how Automatic (Auto) Cell repair and damaged DNA and Cells (phagy) are eaten and recycled. Again for emphasis, These processes occur much more readily in children, but in Adults eating in normal patterns and present day elevated carb diets, these processes are mostly suppressed at all times. Only in a fasting state does Autophagy take place. In a fasting state, the organs, brain, and muscles get emptied of glucose from Carb meals. The body adapts over about a 2 week adjustment period to burning fat either eaten or stored and the liver releases ketones which are a non insulin raising form of clean energy for the brain, organs and muscles. In a very few, very small cases the body need glucose, however even in a 0 Carb diet this is not an issue as glucose is produced only in the correct amounts needed by the liver in a normal process called neoglucogenesis. When burning ketones the body and brain do not experience cycles of energy and fatigue, or clarity and brain fog. Ketones remain constant in the blood stream and unlike glucose are not stored if not used. Excess ketones exit the body in the breath and urine.
Many more chronic diseases of modern humans and their pets (who get a largely carbohydrate think dog food) diet are caused by chronic high insulin which keeps a low (or high in some) level of inflammation causing damage throughout the body. Think any disease not caused by a virus or bacteria or the very rare case of genetics, IE: Arthritis, Alzheimer’s, Arterial Damage/Blocking around the Heart, Stroke, Thyroid disease, Liver, Kidney, Neurological issues which can include nephropathy, MS, depression and a host of others. A low carb diet with intermittent fasting can not only prevent much of this but reverse these processes in many cases. My friends and family saw a very dramatic halt and then reversal of an Autoimmune Neurological Condition in me by taking the path I’ve outlined. I had more than one Autoimmune Disease, both were halted and over a dozen medications stopped. I am no longer the man who could not walk freely and was told that it was a miracle that I could walk with difficulty on crutches. In the same breath, the Neurologist said that I should prepare to live in increasing pain from a wheelchair. It was not pills and treatments that helped me, it was a drastic reduction in carbohydrates causing my glucose and insulin levels to plummet while also causing my blood lipids to drastically improve.
